I am a Senior Accredited BACP counsellor and a Relate qualified therapist.
Whether you are married or single, gay or heterosexual relationships are an essential part of our lives.
Couples tend to seek therapy as a last resort, and may postpone coming until a point has been reached when at least one of the partners is almost past caring.
To begin couple therapy both of you will need to attend an initial consultation, where my aim is to begin to unpick and understand what lies behind your current difficulties and agree how to proceed. My responsibility is to facilitate the space so that both of you will get equal time, attention and understanding.
Couple therapy usually involves weekly appointments and sometimes a few sessions can help to iron out the difficulties. However, many relationships falter through underlying issues that have accumulated and originate from each partner’s experiences in earlier life. All of these factors will influence how many sessions will be needed.
